A Brief Portrait of the City of Sonthofen ![]() With its 4,000 beds and 400,000 overnight stays each year, Sonthofen is one of Allgäu's largest tourist communities and offers its guests summer vacations as well as winter sports of all shapes and sizes. The surrounding countryside, the high mountain climate as well as the numerous tourist facilities leaves nothing to be desired. The last decades' economic boom and increase in population has turned the formerly rural town with its small-scale industries into a major business location, the roots of which lie in: tourism, commerce, trade and industry, services, military, as well as agriculture. Moreover, Sonthofen has an important function as a city of government and schools.![]() The destruction of the town center's core during the wars and the subsequent reconstruction has led to a modern townscape, which, however, has kept its lovely small-town atmosphere and Alpine character. As the center of the region, it is the city of Sonthofen's duty to ensure a sustainable development in the areas of tourism, culture, environmental protection, economy, and travel, toward a modern town in the Alps that remains in touch with nature and tradition. The focus of attention lies on environmentally friendly tourism, strengthening of the region through cooperations and responsible planning and use of natural resources and land. Involvement of the population is part of this effort as is the cooperation with organizations operating in the region and beyond, in order to create a future together in this Alpine region that's worth living in for everybody. ![]() Some facts about Sonthofen Location: lat. 47°31’N, 10°20’ east; on the edge of the “Allgäuer Hochalpen” nature reserve Rural district: Rural district Altitude: between 730 and 1050 above sea level (inhabited area) Population: about 21,000 Area: 46,60 km² 1.
